Former CWA Treasurer Convicted of Felony

Former CWA Local 4501 Treasurer Ms. Christal Harris has plead guilty to Theft in Office under section 2921.41 of the Ohio Revised Code, a felony of the 3rd degree. She was sentenced to 18 months in prison and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $200,000 to the Local. Additionally, OPERS (Ohio Public Empoyees Retirement System) will be ordered by the court to turn over the entirety of her retirement fund to be put toward the restitution order. While she is eligible for judicial release, the Local and the Franklin County Prosecutor are expected to oppose the request when and if it ever comes before the court.

Speaking on behalf of all CWA Local 4501 members in court were Executive Board Member William Eblin, Executive Vice President Mericle Long, and Local President Kevin Kee. Franklin County Common Pleas Judge Kimberly Cocroft mentioned President Kee's speech multiple times when handing down her sentence. Ms. Harris was asked by the court to turn and face the CWA members present in the courtroom and apologize. While she did obey, the court and CWA members were not moved by her cold, emotionless apology.

Once Judge Cocroft completed the sentencing, Ms. Harris was immediately escorted by two Franklin County Deputy Sheriffs to begin serving her prison sentence.
